Monday’s Ode to: Art Nouveau {week seven}
January 15, 2008 by blazedanielle
After showing you all my favorite colors, I thought I might explain the after discussion I had with my professor concerning my choices. I asked her what my color choices suggested, and if I could research anything in particular, and she mentioned that my colors, (and a bit of my style) reflected that of Art Nouveau.
Wikipedia’s first definition of Art Nouveau (French for ‘new art’) says it is an international style of art, architecture and design that peaked in popularity at the beginning of the 20th century (1880-1914) and is characterised by highly-stylised, flowing, curvilinear designs often incorporating floral and other plant-inspired motif. Unlike other styles of design, art nouveau was broad based enough to encompass a whole lifestyle: It was possible to live in an art nouveau house with art nouveau furniture, silverware, crockery, etc.
These are a few images I found off of google, and I thought I’d ask you all what you thought of them. I tend on doing a lot more research, but here is my start. I am quite intrigued with this style!

Art Nouveau is one of my favourite styles. The second and fourth pictures remind me of the concert posters done by Bob Masse in the 60’s and 70’s. The colours in the first one are just simply brilliant.
I really love Art Nouveau! My aunt has a ton of books on Mucha which I used to spend entire afternoons browsing… I love the whole carefully, delicate, flowy, light aesthetic, and the colors!
sweet! What a compliment from your professor!! I love this style…it’s so inspiration.
Love it!
Maxfield Parrish is a fave of mine too. Art Nouveau also I presume?
love,
Mom
I love Art Nouveau! Mucha is one of my favorite all time artists. I love the images you collected, especially the first one. Very nice little ode!
You know, I never would have noticed it myself, but you really are rather Art Nouveau in your style. It is a look I have always loved, particularly the heavy black story-book outlines filled in with delicate colors.
I adore art nouveau! It’s one of my very favorite art styles. The lines! Oh, my goodness, the lines. I wish I lived in a art nouveau house…You must take a look at the buildings of Gaudi while you are researching, they are amazing.
Thank you for sharing these lovely pictures!
i gotta say i LOVE art nouveau, especially how its been adapted into psychedelic posters (as nicola mentioned)
Ooo, I love Art Nouveau! It seems pretty different from your forest creatures and retro girls - very cool, though!
How fun. Art Nouveau?! I need you to come by and get inspired to paint me something for my place. My bare walls are in desp need of some Art Nouveau :) The rest of my month is nutty. Would sometime in early Feb work for you?
lv you - traci
I love and am always inspired by art nouveau. One of the patrons on Glasgow, my city is Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who has designed all kinds of beautiful architecture, design, illustration and many more area of design. I was lucky enough to study for my degree in his magical building Glasgow School of Art http://www.mackeyinc.com/images/Travel/Scotland%208_02/Glasgow%20school%20of%20art.JPG and the library in the building is awsome, http://lisavalentine.files.wordpress.com/2007/07/library2.jpg
He is definately one of the fathers of art nouveau, he is definately worth checking out!
The Art Nouveau movement is something I go back to again and again for inspiration!! And I can certainly see where your artwork draws from it… especially in the colors choices!
