Mary, Mary, quite contrary… How does your garden grow?
April 28, 2008 by blazedanielle
- Hi Dear Friends! I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend! You’ll never guess what I did… Yes! I planted. Last summer was my first official garden, (I did it all by seedlings!), and this year I’ve been longing to do it again! I have started a little late because of school and such, but as I had a free weekend, I went to our local nursery and got my favorite flowers as starts. Lets look at the choices, shall we?

I got purple Clematis, which will climb and have BEAUTIFUL 7-8″ blossoms, I got three varieties of strawberries including a pineapple-crush strawberry! Do you like the teeny one in the picture? And red and purple Sweet Peas, white Lily of the Valley (my birth flower!), pink and red Icelandic Poppies. AND I am planting Mammoth, Dwarf, and Red Sunflowers from seed! Oh I am so excited.
And that’s my kitty, Truman: A grouchy soul who loves to nap and eat both greenery and flies. He was watching me plant at a sneaky distance!
If you haven’t noticed, practically all of my posts lately have spoken of summer. I ran a search of the word on my first page, and I’ve found that I’m pretty much obsessed with the thought of long sunny days, all day art making, and the peace that comes with quiet days. :) Both last year and this year, gardening has given me that peace. It gives me a patience and an excitement, which is an excellent balance, as I tend to want to rush the last of the quarter.
Above is a photo of last year’s zucchini seedlings. So that’s what’s been new with me! :) Do any of you garden? I’d love to hear about your green thumbs!
Have a restful Monday!

Looks like some great choices there. I didn’t have much luck with a garden here. But I may try it again. I love fresh tomatos. :)
Your garden looks delightful. I grew sunflowers one year from seed and it was really, really fun. I had teddy bear sunflowers, which became a short bush with giant fluffy yellow sunflowers, and some other sunflowers of various heights. The birds came and ate the seeds. I tried eating some, but it was definitely more fun to grow them than to eat them. My favourite by far was the teddy bear sunflowers.
I’m growing some flowers and odd things by seed this year and I’ll be buying some vegetable seedlings later on. I’ll post pics on my blog when they start a-sproutin’
Happy Monday!
Oh how fun!! You have me inspired! We worked in our garden this weekend, clearing out some overgrowth and getting it ready for new plantings. Can’t wait to do a little nursery shopping very soon :)
Blaze,
Thank you for your lovely comment, I hope you stop by again soon… have a nice day too
Blaze, I love your post today. It makes me long for quiet summer days too. Check my blog and you’ll see what one of my friends did around their mailbox. I want something like that so badly!
But, I have bought some begonias to plant, but I’m really wanting to plant some more flowers.
We have bad soil where we live (red clay type soil) and no matter what we do, we can’t grow vegetables, but we do plant container flowers mostly and they seem to do just fine.
Now, I want to go read The Secret Garden.
Your garden and new plants look wonderful! I absolutely love your black and white photograph of your seedlings. I haven’t been able to do much gardening lately but make a point of at least standing out admiring its season stages each day. I have a clematis too, I have been unlucky in the past, (brought 2 to early deaths :(, ) but I have consulted the experts and know now to protect the roots and so far I have little blossoms. You have inspired me to take a photo update!
Happy Monday oxoxo
PS got your CD, unfortunately same thing happened again, I am so sorry. But some things are just not meant to be, I’m doing a CD swap over at Caseys so I’ll burn you one too and see if this one make it on the journey over the water :)
Good for you! I think you should pop on over to my house and help me with my sad, sad, garden!
your love of summer makes me wonder if you should consider joining me in early retirement in florida. what do you think? we’ll hang out by the pool, play shuffleboard and eat dinner each “night” at 4pm!
doesn’t it sound like a blast!?!?!?
You’re getting me in the mood to plant my starts outside. I love my seedlings they are so tender and fragile. When they get strong enough I may take your lead and feature a planting post on my little bog as well. have a great day! Hooray for summer days! Enough of this silly snowy spring I’m having.
I think your choices are lovely, and will look beautiful. After years of gardening, I am finally waving the white flag, as the bunnies have won out, eating almost everything I plant, (but they are so darn cute, who can be mad?) I just bought some gorgeous bushes, and hope the bunnies simply will choose to use them as shelter and not food!
I love lily of the valley.. that will be so beautiful.
My family always had some sort of garden growing up…whether it was flowers, veggies or fruit. It took me until just last year to try it on my own. I thought it would be an exciting project for my son (three at the time) to be a part of. He was so anxious to run outside each morning to see what had grown.
It being my first “official” vegetable garden, I bought a few extra plants - I bought three of everything, thinking with my luck, only one would survive from each bunch. To our surprise, everything thrived and grew out of control…oh, my husband was heavy handed on the miracle grow too. We were giving away our goods to anyone in the neighborhood who would take it.
I can’t wait to start this year…if it would only stop raining!
ok so did you write this prior to, or after class today?
because if you wrote it before class today… my quite possible may be psychic. mary mary quite contrary and summer.
summer is also my favorite season, even thought sometime between july and august i’ll complain a little about how hot and humid it is. one of my favorite plants we have is a clematis. i love how it climbs on the entrance of our little garden and it gets covered in blossoms… so pretty :) last summer my son diego and i planted yellow sunflowers and they grew so tall, the blossoms were the size of dinner plates! the squirrels in our neighborhood had a feast with the seeds :) we also plant tomatoes, serrano peppers, bell peppers, cilantro, cucumbers and flowers, lots of flowers! not to mention all the other perennials we already have that keep coming back every year. good luck with all your gardening i can’t wait to see when things are blossoming and growing fruits :)
If you enjoy tomatoes there is a small orange colored tomato called Sun Gold that is available early in the season and the taste is wonderful. Local garden stores often have it but it sells quickly. It can be container grown or in the ground.
I’m afraid I’m not much of a green thumb. I do occasionally get the urge but with the cold weather coming on it’s not too often. Yours look lovely though! I do love home grown strawberries.
:) I think you’ve seen my new raised garden bed…if not, the 5×12 box is finished and ready for me to fill in the dirt and soil. Will be planted this weekend, fingers are crossed.
My sweetpeas are popping up everywhere in the front yard near the fence! I let them go to seed from the previous year. And the birds plant sunflowers all over, I don’t need to.
Love Truman!
oh miss Blaze!! I simply love reading about your little gardening adventure… you will have to keep us updated as things continue to grow. :)
I have a decidedly brown thumb (which I think is ironic, considering my last name… lol!). I tend to accidentally kill everything I try to grow. except years ago I managed to have one zinnia I started from seeds survive; although it was the oddest looking plant I ever saw! rofl.
hope you’re having a lovely tuesday!!! :)
How sweet! Good for you. I can’t wait to have my own garden someday, when I am out of this apartment life! I love that kitty most, though!!
