Holga Holga!
April 29, 2008 by blazedanielle
Hello and good morning to all you green thumbs out there! (And you brown thumbs too! ;)) It was so much fun to hear about your past and present gardens. I look forward to reading some gardening posts from you all. I too will be keeping you updated.
As for today, I want to tell you about the Holga Camera.. Have you ever heard of it? They are pretty special - especially with Polaroid Cameras going out of stock. (So sad.) I love my Holga so much, and I got it for about $15-20 at a local camera store. There are also some pretty decent prices on Ebay. Holgas are very interesting because they can let in light leaks, and they are essentially toy cameras. They are purposely made “cheap,” for those who can appreciate the unpredictability of light exposure, color change, etc.
My photography teacher last year told me that some people even purposely smash (gently of course) their camera, only to duct tape it up - letting each photo shoot have a surprise outcome! Here are some examples of what you can do with this camera. (Photos taken from Flickr’s Edward Olive, Lemmonice, and Judy Stalus).
Pretty beautiful, huh? I love the subtle colors and foggy edges. They remind me of Alicia Bock’s photos. I definitely think it is worth the investment! Especially the surprise of getting your photos back. I would suggest taking them on sunny days so the light can really penetrate through the camera (if that’s desired). Otherwise, have fun!
Happy Tuesday folks!
xoxo

Beautiful! I’ve been toying with the idea of getting one of these and even had one in my shopping cart from urban outfitters and backed out last minute…after seeing these I am seriously having second thoughts!
Great shot of the parachute drop! I’m so happy to have learned about this camera. I’m truly devastated about the polaroids going out.
Don’t be sad, we’ll get it sorted at some point :) These are amazing photos, kind of like the images in my dreams. I had never heard of Holga before, I really do learn something new from you all the time! P has been a little monkey today for most of the day, but he has run him self out and has crashed for the night, thank goodness :)
I love the look. Alicia Bock is such an inspiration (as are so many other Etsians out there). My father is big on photography and my mentor through the years…only lately have I gotten back into it - and he’s THRILLED. We’ve been trading photographing secrets, manually and digitally (on my behalf, since that’s what I know) We were just discussing the Holga the other day. He’s more interested in manipulating things his own way where I’m all for the easiest and cheapest way :) Still it’s nice to connect and have fun creating in the process.
Ooh, I want one! *B
Oh, these are beautiful! Like mysterious snapshots at a hidden world!
Oooh…so jealous! I have been wanting a Holga forever!
ooooo I am so on this one…thanks for the tip!
So intriguing. Oh my, I must purchase one of these cool camera’s. Love their utilitarian purpose. Beautiful images!
These are very beautiful images! Now I want to see some of yours! he he! I really love film photography, there is a magic and misery in the development that digital will never have. Have a great Tuesday.
Yeah, Holgas are so trendy right now.
Everyone is going for the vintage look.
They sure do look like a lot of fun though!
i love the effect this camera achieves. i have never heard of it before…thanks so much for the intro!~
oh! I’m hoping to eventually get a Holga… I’ve been dreaming of taking beautiful photos with one for some time. ;) I just love the subtle “offness” of the images that the Holga produces. so beautiful…
This must be the perfect camera for you. I have always noticed a similar play with lighting in your photography. I can’t wait to see how your photos turn out.
Gorgeous photos, now I want a camera like that!
Surprise pictures! How fun indeed! :)
oooh!
i’ve been dying to get an holga for a long time but i always end up putting it off, i don’t know why. i used to shoot pinhole with a camera i made out of a costa rican cigar box. i still have it, hopefully i’ll start shooting again when those long sunny summer days come. i love the effects the light leaks give the exposures, so pretty :)
I had never heard about this camera but I love the effect light has on how the pictures turn out. Beautiful.
Blaze, those are wonderful images. I’ve been taking a few photos too and I love using my digital camera. It’s just a regular point and shoot, but I’ve taken some amazing pictures of flowers. In fact, I framed one of my MIL’s yellow rose bush to give to her for Mother’s Day.
And, yes I like to garden too. I usually just flower garden, though and put them in containers. We don’t have good soil where we live, so unfortunately, we can’t grow vegetables. I wish we could. We’ve even tried raised beds and that didn;t go well either. :( We do have a great vegetable market near us, though, and several neighbors who grow vegetables, so we can find fresh vegetables fairly easily. I still like being able to go outside in my yard and pick my own, though.
Very cool ~ I’m sort of doing something along that line. I’ve bought an old Kodak Brownie for the Through the Viewfinder photography. I’ll post pictures once I experiement!
